Politics first
The Democratic leadership in Washington has added $20 billion in pork spending and a troop pullout provision in the bill to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The purpose of the pork is to buy votes from politicians who oppose the bill. The purpose of the provision to start pulling the troops out this summer is to put President Bush in the position of vetoing the bill. If he vetoes it they can say he didn't fund the troops. Democratic Sen. Harry Reed is already saying it. Shrewd and calculated political maneuvering.
I wonder: If the Democrats had spent as much time, energy and creativity fighting the terrorists as they have President Bush since the war started, would we already be bringing some of the troops home without spending the extra $20 billion?
RICHARD O'BRIEN, BURNSVILLE
This might have had some ounce of credibility if the President had not been going around whining about how the Democratic Congress doesn't support the troops because they have not given him a funding bill without strings attached. Playing politics? Christ, the whole Iraq war was one big game of politics from the start.
