How are Republicans and Communists similar?

When faced with a failed ideology and a series of policy failures, people who espouse Communism fell back on the argument "It wasn't really Communism, it was subverted by [Stalin|Mao|whoever] into something different. True Communism would have worked."

And now it appears the Republican party is offering us the same excuse. I guess they've run out of everybody else to blame for their failures. So now they are blaming their hero Bush. It turns out that Bush was actually a "liberal", that's why all those policies failed.

It never mattered that, uhh, us supposed "liberals" were questioning the policies from day one and we were innundated by wingnut whining about how we just hated Bush.

Glenn Greenwald has an interesting post up talking about some of the examples of the Distancing from Bush, mostly surrounding a debate he's having with Luciana Goldberg's spawn.
